STA was formed on 7th August 1971 by three founding members; namely, The Fourth Division Timber Merchants Association, The Sarawak First & Second Divisions Sawmillers Association, and The Third Division & Bintulu District Sawmiller Association.
On 20th September 1988, STA restructured its membership. Existing members of the three Associations were disbanded, and together they joined a single association, STA.
On 15th June 1988, STA shifted its new office in Kuching. In a historical move on 15 October 2000, STA shifted to its own building Wisma STA.
Currently, STA has about 600 member companies who are involved in the timber trade and industry. They deal with timber and timber products which include logs, sawntimber, plywood, furniture mouldings/dowels, furniture, furniture parts, laminated board products and other panel products. Collectively, STA members employ approximately 100,000 workers in Sarawak.
STA Objectives
To promote, foster and enhance the relationship between all Members of the Association.
To promote and uphold as prudently as possible the interest and well being of all Members of the Association.
To promote, ascertain and protect the continuous well being of the timber trade and industry in the State of Sarawak.
To invest and/or engage with the approval of the general meeting in any business which may be beneficial to the Association.
To purchase, take on lease, exchange hire or acquire any movable and immovable property rights privileges which will benefit the Association for the achievement of its
object
STA Secretariat
The Secretariat is located on the Eleventh Floor, Wisma STA in Kuching.
The Secretariat is divided into two sections namely Member Services and Technical & Research.
Member Services
Represents Members in meetings with the Government and relevant authorities
Organises seminars, dialogues, meetings and training courses for the benefit of Members
Coordinates trade delegations and various missions to Sarawak to facilitate businesses for Members
Represents Sarawak's interests in various national and international flora, and monitor world markets for tropical timber products
Technical & Research
This section was established in late 1995 to provide technical support to downstream members as well as coordinate industry related research and training, with the objective of producing
efficiently, wood products of consistent quality.
Roles and Functions
Represents Members in meetings with the Government and relevant authorities
Represents Sarawak’s interests in various national and international flora
Monitors world markets for tropical timber and timber products
Organises seminars, dialogues, meetings and training courses for the benefit of Members
Coordinates trade delegations and various missions to Sarawak to facilitate businesses for Members
Promotes the use of tropical timber through appropriate dissemination of information
Provides technical and research support to members
Provides educational visits and study attachments for both local and foreign students to learn about Sarawak’s forestry and timber industry
