Revocation of the Australian Commercial Import Program for ramin from Sarawak

We have received an email from Mr. Awang Mohamad Edwani bin Awang Bohari of Sarawak Forestry Corporation informing us on the revocation of the Australian Commercial Import Program for ramin from Sarawak.

Under Australian law, all imports of CITES Appendix II species must be made under an approved Commercial Import Program ("CIP") issued by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources of Australia. A CIP for ramin from Sarawak was approved in January 2006 for a period of five years. However, the approval is subject to revocation at any time if the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources ("the Minister") is satisfied that the conditions of the approval are not being fully met or maintained.

The Minister has revoked the Commercial Import Program for ramin from Sarawak. Upon further enquiry, we were given to understand that the Australian buyers have until 19 September 2007 to fulfil existing commitments with the sellers from Sarawak. After this date, no further imports will be allowed. The Minister however has indicated his willingness to reconsider the case if Malaysia can present its case successfully at the next CITES Standing Committee meeting in mid-2008.
