An hour's drive away from the city is Jong's Crocodile Farm along the Kuching-Serian Highway. The reptiles come in action at 11 am and 3 pm daily, which are feeding times. The Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, thirty kilometers south of Kuching, is a halfway house for protected animals and birds that are injured or confiscated from poachers. In this center, animals are conditioned to re-adjust to their natural habitat before being release in the wilds.

 

 

 

Bau, 60 km away from Kuching, was brought into prominence by a 19th century gold rush. Nowadays, Bau is mainly a market town and administrative center. Some interesting caves around Bau are the Blue Lake,which is an old mine ,Wind Cave, made up of small passageways and the Fairy Cave, a larger and more impressive cave.

The Matang Wildlife Centre in Kubah National Park, 20 km west of Kuching, has trekking trails, waterfalls and picnic spots. The Santubong Peninsula is 30 km north of Kuching. Attractions of all kinds are found here: quaint fishing villages, superb seafood restaurant, the beautiful Damai Beach, an Arnold Palmer designed golf course, luxury beach hotels, and a "living cultural museum".

The latter takes in the form of the Sarawak Cultural Village, which covers seven hectares. Here, there are seven ethnic houses with live in residents dressed in their finest costumes carrying out traditional activities. Apart from Damai Beach, other beaches include Santubong Beach, Siar Beach, Sematan Beach, Pantai Penyok and Pantai Bandong. Of the lot, Siar Beach is the most attractive as there are bays, inlets and rock formations. For excellent seafood, go to the stilt restaurants in Kampung Buntal.

 







Bako National Park
requires only two hours travelling time from Kuching. Spectacular cliffs, mangrove forests and secluded sandy beaches are its main attractions. To get there, first travel to Kampung Bako. From there, a 30-minute boat ride will bring you to Park Headquarters. Maps showing the jungle trails are provided to visitors. Hostels, lodges and a campsite offer accommodation. Along the trails in the early morning and at dusk, you might see flying lemurs, proboscis monkeys and bearded pigs.
